The Ultimate Travelers Playlist

Being a musical type I try to pick up some local music everywhere I go, it acts as a kind of sound track for my trip and will bring me instantly back to a certain time and place in years to come. It even teaches me a little about the people and culture I am exploring.

When you’re far away from home, music can be more than a window into a different culture. Music can brighten your mood on those long hot bus rides, it can act as a balm for your homesickness, it can remind you why you’re doing this crazy traveling thing in the first place and create new friendships as you share some of your own culture with new acquaintances.

A good play list is absolutely vital to survive any serious journey and to build that playlist you need to consider these three factors:

Check out the full playlist here

1. Pick Me Up/ Sing-along:

•Lion King - I Just Can’t Wait To Be King

Because you can’t go past Disney for a pick me up sing along.

•Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song

For those days when it’s just all too much.

•Smashmouth – I’m A Believer

It may be cheesy but it’s also terribly catchy.

•Calvin Harris – Summer

Perfect for chilling on an exotic beach with a drink in hand.

•Bon Jovi – It’s My Life

When you’re tired and dirty and you just missed the last bus - remember this one.

2. Music from Home:

•Poi E - Patea Maori Club

Because it’s a classic and someone will ask you what Maori music is like sooner or later.

•Dave Dobbyn And Herbs - Slice Of Heaven

This one is my ultimate home sickness cure.

•Supergroove – Can’t Get Enough

A kiwi anthem, if you meet another kiwi out there they will be able to sing-along.

•Lorde – Royals

A bit more modern and good for reminding people we do play on the world stage now and then.

•Men at Work - Land Down Under

Ok this is full on Australian, but when faced with the rest of the world you will discover the Aussie’s aren’t that different from us Kiwi’s after all.

3. Cheesy Traveling Goodness:

•Willie Nelson - On The Road Again

Suddenly these lyrics make sense and you can feel a part of the lifestyle - even just momentarily.

•Metallica - Wherever I May Roam

Even when you’re all alone at the ends of the earth, you’ll learn to revel in it with this tune.

•The Beatles - Ticket To Ride

This tune bridges the generation gap and can inspire sing-alongs in the most unlikely places.

•Whitesnake - Here I Go Again

When you drag your hung-over carcass up to catch that early morning bus and wonder why you’re doing this traveling thing again.

•Red Hot Chili Peppers – Road Trippin

Smooth, laid back, everything a road trip song should be.

Bonus drinking track:

•Alestorm – Drink

Because sometimes you just need something cold at the end of a long day.

These are just a few examples from the playlist check out all 55 songs and counting here
